Pair of Shahsavan Sumakh Panels PRICE $ 2,000.00 (USD) Size: 50 x 40 cm / 1'8" x 1'4" Region: West Asia - Persia - Northwest Persia - Shahsavan Item Type: Rugs and Carpets - Bags and Trappings - Mafrash panel Period / Date: 19th century second half (1850 - 1899) Materials: all wool Structure / Technique: sumakh weave Comments On Condition: two lined panels, with some holes Full Description: Very nice colours and designs of animals: These two panels come probably from one of the rarest types of Shahsavan mafrashes. JBOC's Notes: The main iconography seems very familiar but I was not sure from where. At first I did not see anything very close in John Wertime's Sumak Bags of Northeast Persia and Transcaucasia. 1998. I suspected that this must be a Karabagh Shahsavan sumac. So I went back and reviewed borders in Wertime's Karabagh section and I spotted Sumak Bags plate 129. It has the same guard borders as the bottom white border in this piece. so on furthier reflection I realized that the main iconography reminds me of a Qarabagh Mafrash that Piralov published in his 1913 Kustar report see Sumak Bags ill. 30. Attribution: Karabagh Shahsavan sumac. For Further Reading: Thanks and best wishes, J. Barry O'Connell Jr. |
