Bahktiarri

  • The Bahktiarri are a Persian Tribal confederation made up primarily of Lurs. There is no dominant Luri wide tribal confederation so it is incorrect to call the Bahktiarri a Luri sub-tribe. The Bahktiarri have a special place in history because they lived around the oil fields of Iran and the tribal leaders sold out to the British early on. At times Bahktiarri even hired on as mercenaries and fought under British orders.
  • Because of the infusion of British money the Tribal leaders lived in town and entertained foreign guests extravagantly giving the tribe a very high profile to the rest of the world.
  • The Luri/Bahktiarri are linguistically Persian unlike the other Shiraz area tribes who were mainly Turkic or Arabic.

    Black Church

    • An important Church in the Reformation of Transylvania. The church was originally Roman Catholic but became truely Catholic (Lutheran) under the great reformer Johannes Honterus during the Reformation.
    • "The inhabitants of Brasov or "Kronstad" at that time, in almost 100 years from 1383 until 1477, built the Black Church, the largest gothic construction in Romania and one of the largest in the South-Eastern Europe. Dedicated to Virgin Marry the church was of catholic faith for more than a century and a half and later with the reformation sweeping across the Europe it became a Lutheran one. The church acquired its name after the great fire of 1689 when it was badly damaged; the roof was destroyed and the walls blackened from the smoke. The reconstruction after the great fire took another 100 years, most of the objects inside the church dating from the reconstruction time except the baptismal font which was cast in bronze by a local craftsman in 1450. The walls of the church are covered by ottoman prayer rugs dating from 16th-18th centuries. The local merchants gave those rugs as gifts to the church, as gratitude towards God. The impressive church organ manufactured in Germany in 1829 has 4000 pipes and is considered the second biggest in the country. Outside the church is the statue of Johannes Honterus the priest who introduced in 16th century the reformation among the Saxons in Transilvania." http://www.atlantic.ro/atlantic/Atlantic_site/what_to_see/brasov.htm

    Black Tents

    • There is a dichotomy in nomads in Southwest Asia. Some use a yurt while others use a tent made from woven goat hair. Goat hair tents are often called Black Tents. Goat hair tent walls breath and allow air to circulate when they are dry but swell and provide protection from rain when they are wet. Black tents are more suited to moderate climates and yurts to more severe climates but in place in Afghanistan you may see both used with in a few miles of each other.

    Borchalu

    • In P. R. J. Ford's book Oriental Carpet Design Ford mentioned that the Borchalu were Mongol. That peaked my curiosity. If they are Mongol than I should be able to identify them since Mongols are well documented. Here is what I found:
    • In about 1179 a young man who would grow up to be Cinggis Qahan (Ghengis Khan) was aided by the son of the Chieftain of the Arulat clan. The young man was Bo'orcu. He became one of Cinggis Qahan's Dorben Kulu'ud (Great Warriors). In the Yuan ch'ao pi-shih, quatrain 205, it is recorded that later in life Cinggis Qahan said "Let Bo'orcu govern the ten thousand of the right hand which take the Altai as pillow." In other words the Qahan gave a proto-tribal unit to a key general. I am certainly no linguist but I translate Borchalu as Bo'orcu Lu or the people of Bo'orcu. The Lu of Bo'orculu as coming from the same root as the Mongol term Ulus which means the land, animals, and people, that a that an IL or tribal group controls. These people became known as the Bo'orculu or people of Bo'orcu. Over the years Bo'orculu becomes Borchalu. So if Ford is correct and I believe he is that the Borchalu are Mongol than they must be descended from the Horde of Bo'orcu.
