The Oliveira Antique Caucasian Shirvan Rug with Three Medallions

• Size: 227 x 137 cm

• Region: West Asia > Caucasus > Northeast Caucasus > Shirvan

• Type: Rugs and Carpets

• Date/Period: 19th century : late

• Structure: Knots: 53 (v) x 26 (h) = 1,378 / dm2

• Condition: Excellent, with soft wool and a good pile, with only a very small area where the dyes used for the black colour corroded.

• Full Description
  A very attractive Caucasian Shirvan rug, with three medallions, each containing a large hooked motif with a geometric floral rendition at its centre. The beautiful colours of this rug, along with its main border, make it a magnificent specimen of antique Caucasian weaving. The classification of Caucasian rugs with these medallions is not unanimous. We follow Ian Bennett. Murray Eiland and E. Gans-Ruedin classify similar rugs as Gendje. Charles W. Jacobsen, as well as the Engelhardt catalogue, published in 1980, label other rugs with similar medallions as Kazak rugs.
