The Oliveira Antique Caucasian Shirvan Rug with Three Medallions

  • Size: 189 x 123 cm

  • Region: West Asia > Caucasus > Northeast Caucasus > Shirvan

  • Type: Rugs and Carpets

  • Date/Period: 19th century : late

  • Materials: soft wool, natural dyes

  • Structure: Knots: 59 (v) x 33 (h) = 1,947 / dm2

  • Condition: Very good, with good pile all over.

  • Full Description
    A very nice blue Shirvan rug with a vertical row of three lozenge medallions with geometricized flowers inside. At the lozenges' ends "a radial ornament can be seen which recalls old Egyptian and Persian royal insignia" (Ulrich Schurmann, Caucasian Rugs, Poolesville, 1990, pp. 196). The main border is a traditional ‘crab' border design. The small diamond border is an older border type.
