Baluch Rugs: The Shehady Antique Baluchistan Rug

Antique Baluch Rug

I spotted this Baluch Rug on eBay offered by my dear friend Serapi. Of course Serapi is Wade Shehady Jr. the great Pittsburgh carpet dealer Trusted Resource List - Rug & Carpet Dealers In The U.S. - Shehady's Oriental Rugs.

This is a nice example of Baluch rug with a number of features that leave me wondering what side of the border it was woven on, Persia, or Afghanistan?

Wade wrote the following in the auction ad:

"ANTIQUE BALUCHISTAN ORIENTAL RUG.
Size: 3'3" x 5'2". Age: 1880 circa. Condition: Good. Even pile throughout with the exception of low areas in central field. (Not Worn). Browns have oxidized. Complete rug with original edges, and selvage all sides. Pure vegetable dyes. Wool warp, and weft. K.P.S.I.: 6x9. A very handsome Baluch with great colors, and designs. Has been professionally washed. Ready for use. Needs nothing, but your favorite place to enjoy. Buyer pays for shipping, and proper insurance. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.Thank you, and Good Luck! "

Attribution - Baluch

The emblem inside the lattice pattern is similar to the field pattern in Baluch Woven Treasures. Plates 23 and 47. The Turkmen Line Border is related to Baluch Woven Treasures Plates 9, 11, and 20. Boucher identified all of the rugs with related iconography as Baluch. That strikes me as correct. This rug seems attributable to the Persian Baluch. Wade's date of 1880 seems very plausible.

Dye Usage

I have this theory that clearly commercial Baluch rugs are like to have more colors and more use of commercial dyes. For instance in this rug there is relatively little blue since blue was not native to Khorasan and the weaver had to buy it to use it. The red is obviously Madder and was available locally so it is used more. Even if the dyer bought the red in town or had it dyed by a professional dyer local dyes are less expensive than Indigo that had to be imported from India. The white and brown were also colors available locally. Brown wool could have been used undyed but it was usually dyed and the dye used caused it to be brittle so the brown usually wears first. Brown wool dyed brown was the least expensive dyed wool available and was widely used.
