3 foot 10 inch. by 8 foot 9
inch.
This is a classic Antique
Lampa Karabagh rug.
Lampa Karabagh are
from the Ngorno Karabakh section of the Southern Caucasus. Similar rugs are
made across the Iran border in karadagh. Compare this rug to Plate 134
in Ian Bennett's
Oriental
Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian.
Rugs from Ngorno Karabakh
are generally woven by one of three ethno-linguistic groups; Azeri,
Armenian or Kurd. I attribute this rug in particular and Lampas in
general to the Armenians. There is a wealth of published examples of
Lampas with Armenian inscriptions such as Inscribed
Armenian Rugs of Yesteryear plate A-190 or Armenian Carpet
plate 90 and Weavers,
Merchants and Kings plates 16 and 17.
.
To go further in attribution
than Ngorno Karabakh is difficult but it is my guess that this is a
village rug from near Shusha.
Color is difficult over the
internet, please use the Direct Scan below for the best representation
of color in this rug.
