Karabagh Rugs: Antique Armenian Lampa Karabagh Rug

Karabagh Rugs: Antique Armenian Lampa Karabagh Rug

3 foot 10 inch. by 8 foot 9 inch.

This is a classic Antique Lampa Karabagh rug. Lampa Karabagh are from the Ngorno Karabakh section of the Southern Caucasus. Similar rugs are made across the Iran border in karadagh. Compare this rug to Plate 134 in Ian Bennett's Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian.

Rugs from Ngorno Karabakh are generally woven by one of three ethno-linguistic groups; Azeri, Armenian or Kurd. I attribute this rug in particular and Lampas in general to the Armenians. There is a wealth of published examples of Lampas with Armenian inscriptions such as Inscribed Armenian Rugs of Yesteryear plate A-190 or Armenian Carpet plate 90 and Weavers, Merchants and Kings plates 16 and 17.

.

To go further in attribution than Ngorno Karabakh is difficult but it is my guess that this is a village rug from near Shusha.

Color is difficult over the internet, please use the Direct Scan below for the best representation of color in this rug.

Origin of the Lampa design

I have a theory I am working on that Lampa Karabagh rugs are derivative of a particular type of Khorasan carpet and were transplanted to Karabagh when the Armenians were allowed to return in the early 19th century. One of these days I will have to lay it out and publish it.

This rug has wonderful color! This rug has the clear uncluttered look of a Lampa Karabagh as opposed to the more Persianate Lampa Karadaghs.
