Persian Rugs/Kurdish Rugs: Antique Sennah Kelim

Antique Sennah Kelim

I spotted this antique Kurdish Sennah Kelim on eBay offered by my dear friend Serapi. Of course Serapi is Wade Shehady Jr. the great Pittsburgh carpet dealer

Trusted Resource List - Rug & Carpet Dealers In The U.S. - Shehady's Oriental Rugs.

eBay Bidder List: Serapi

Wade wrote the following in the auction ad:

"Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. Buyer must pay for shipping, and proper insurance. Thank you, and Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Type: Sehna-Kilim (flat weave). Size: 4'5" x 6'6". Age: 1870-1880 circa. Condition: Very good. Complete. Some slight fraying one fringe side (photo supplied). Areas of wool missing (nothing large in size). Mainly in dark browns that have oxidized. Great early colors & dyes. Wool on cotton warp. Has been professionally washed. "

Antique Sennah Kelim

Compare the detail to the left to ill 31 Eiland. Oriental Rugs A Complete Guide page 40. The flowers and overall design is very close to the Eiland illustration. Eiland notes that 19th century Sennah Kelims are very similar to Sennah pile rug patterns. Eiland. Oriental Rugs A Complete Guide page 100.

Cecil Edwards mentions that the weavers in Sennah (Sannandag) use a very fine yarn with a tight twist. Edwards, A. Cecil. The Persian Carpet. page 122. Edwards was speaking of pile carpets but this same yarn is used in the Kelims. This makes a very fine Kelim. Sennah and Bijar kelims can be very similar and fineness and yarn size then become the key to attribution. Sennah is much finer and Bijar is thicker and relatively coarser.
