Baluch Rugs: Hazara Sumac Rug

Size: 4 foot 9 inch by 9 foot.

This is a particularly nice Baluch type Sumac Kelim. I suspect that these may be Hazara but in the marketplace these are called Baluch.

I based my suspicion on the weave and on the wool. Wool of course depends on the breed of sheep. Hazara raise Hazaragi sheep. No other group that I have been able to identify uses Hazaragi sheep. This rug has a distinctive wool that is common to rugs I identify as Hazara.

The Hazara

The Hazara are a fascinating people of the Central Highlands of Afghanistan. The Hazara look Mongolian but speak an archaic form of Persian called Hazaragi. After much study I have come to the conclusion that the Hazara are the descendents of the great camp of Cingis Qan.
