1972 when he worked on two archeological
expeditions in Iran. He spent a year living with
two tribal groups- the Afshar of Kerman and the
Qashqa'i of Fars- making him one of the few major
dealers to have spent time "in the
field". From 1972-1977, he travelled
extensively in Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey,
enriching his knowledge of their tribes and woven
