Notes on Dr,
Murray Eiland Jr.
|
A 5 Star Book!
Murray and his son Murray III wrote Oriental
Rugs A Complete Guide. It is one of the very best
books in the field. If you have 5 books on Oriental Rugs
this book should be one of them. I know some people avoid
general rug books once they gain a little knowledge but
they miss the point because this book is every bit as
important as the specialist literature. For instance one
old friend fancies himself a Turkmen specialist he has
said he has not read this book because he is too far
advanced for general books. All I can say is this book is
as good or better than many specialist books that he has
bought and some of his comments show he missed this book.

Eiland, Murray L, Jr.
and Eiland, Murray L. III Oriental Rugs A
Complete Guide. Boston: Little Brown and
Company, 1998 4th edition.
The single best collectors book on Oriental
carpets. This completely blows away the 3rd
edition and that was the best book in the field
before this one.

Dr, Murray Eiland Jr. (left) speaking with Dr. John
Sommer
Dr, Murray Eiland Jr. is one of the
greatest rug scholars of all time. Over the years when I
have run into problems understanding something about a
rug I call on a small group of experts. Of all of those
experts Murray is one of the very best. Murray is a bit
of a skeptic. He is very cautious about what he accepts.
On occasion Murray and I disagree and he is such a
gentleman that it is always a tremendously educational
event. When I wrote The Incidence Of
High Ply Counts In Early Cotton Warps Murray was a
tremendous help even though we agreed to disagree.
Perhaps one of the greatest examples of scholarship among
gentlemen is "F. R, Martin's A History of Oriental
Carpets Before 1800, along with running commentaries by
Charles Grant Ellis and Murray L. Eiland, Jr." that
was reprinted in Oriental Rug Review. Two razor sharp
minds sometime in disagreement but the article is a
treasure.
Over the years I have spoken to or met a number of
Murray's very impressive family. His parents are charming
and it is wonderful to hear he pride in his mother's
voice when she speaks of him. Murray's wife is a very
gracious lady. I have only spoken to Murray III once but
he is doing some great work and making a big contribution
to the field of Archeology as well as rug studies. Murray
and Emmett Eiland are brothers but I will deal with
Emmett in his own page.
