JBOC: This is a wonderful example of what I am calling a Shirvan Stepped Medallion. The "S" border is very similar to Schurmann, Ulrich. Caucasian Rugs plate 66. I suspect that this is the product of a long line of design evolution that includes dragon carpets and 18th century sunburst carpets see Yetkin, Serare. Early Caucasian Carpets in Turkey plates 16 and 25.
