Antique Yomud Turkoman Mafrash@tribalsource
Item # 2504297533
Description
Turkoman Mafrash, Yomud group, Central Asia, 19th century, 2’1” x 1’1”
The field design seen here in this Yomud Turkoman mafrash (small
shallow bag) is very different, a rare form of a nine “gol” format. The
minor or secondary “gols” are very different and I cannot recall seeing
them before.

These star secondaries are highlighted with white 1-2-1 cross motifs
which add a shimmering effect to the surface design, an attractive
feature.

The border is a motif which has been described by Elena Tsareva of St.
Petersburg as a “bride’s belt” motif, further suggesting the fact this
piece is probably a dowry weaving as many of these posh pile bags are.
.JBOC: Compare this piece to Thompson Yomud Mafrash Lot
40. This piece was collected by Tom Gasho.
