I spotted this rug on eBay offered by my dear friend Serapi. Of course Serapi is Wade Shehady Jr. the great Pittsburgh carpet dealer Trusted Resource List - Rug & Carpet Dealers In The U.S. - Shehady's Oriental Rugs.

Wade wrote the following in the auction ad:

"Size: 3'9" x 9'9". Age: 1870-1880 circa. Condition: Very good. Has had approx. 3" x 7" re-weave. Excellent work. (photos will show the back & face of this area). Thick lustrous pile throughout.Complete with original edges both sides and selvage. Very seldom do you find Kurd Kazaks of this age in wonderful condition. Cotton warp and red dyed wool weft. Vegetable dyes. K.P.S.I.: 5 x 7. Has been professionally washed. Needs nothing, but your favorite place to enjoy this antique rug. Kurd Kazaks are the rugs produced by the Kurds in Ngorno Karabakh. Runner formats are typical and wool and color quality is very high. Among Kurds there are two major linguistic groups, those who speak Kurdish and those who speak Kurmanji. The Kurmanji Kurds tend to live in the mountains. They are often shepherds and the wool quality tends to be very high. I also note that unless the rug is obviously Caucasian as this one is with the "Crab Border" they are usually attributed to Persia.

The Kurds in Ngorno Karabakh are found predominantly south and west of Shusha and near the Iran border. Oriental Rugs A Complete Guide Page 264. The Kurdish areas of Ngorno Karabakh appear to be in the upper elevations as I compare the maps.
