Yomut Chuval

Yomut Juval / Chuval Section of the Yomut Rug Guide

A Chuval is a flat storage bag. For many years I prefered the spelling juval but juval is impropper and the correct spelling is chuval. Special thanks to Seyitguly Batyrov of Turkmen Carpets Online in Turkmenistan. These bags are usually seen in the west as just the front panel. The bag face is easier to display so many dealers removed the backs in the old days.

Yomud Chuval, Early 19th Century

Here is a fine purple group Yomud chuval from circa 1820-1840 measuring 26 x 46 inches. A range of plum colored hues are arrayed across its surface. There is considerable irregularity in the weave from handspun wool in the wefts. The minor gull is done especially well and has an interesting affective presence.
