North east Caucasus
Third quarter 19th century, 6ft. x 3ft.4in. 1.83m. x 1.02m.
Slight even wear overall. This represents a very rare type with a particularly beautiful and unusual border.

JBOC: I suspect the rug refered to was plate 307 in Bennett, Ian et al. Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian. In the write-up of that rug Bennett mentions Yetkin, Serare. Early Caucasian Carpets in Turkey plate 58 and one other in the McMullan collection. Surely there are other examples but these four make up a very exclusive group.
