JBOC's Notes on Oriental Rugs

Oriental Rug Books Authors Beginning with A

If I lost it I would not replace it.

Of some use but not one I would go out of my way to find.

Useful.

Very useful and one I would recommend strongly.

A very important or even the definitive work on the subject. It does not have to be perfect but if I give it 5 stars and you are interested in that area then you should own a copy.

Not Yet Rated - I haven't gotten to it yet so if you wish to review it please feel free. There is a limit to how many books I can read so it it is not rated do not assume anything is wrong with the book. If you disagree with any of my opinions write me and I may annotate this list with your comments.

"Archeology in India". 1958 Government of India, Faridabad, 1967

This book deals with a period too early to be of much use to me. There was virtually no tangible link between tools of the pit dwellers and Oriental carpets. Indian Art

Archer, W. G. Indian Painting in Bundi and Kotah. London, UK: Her Majesty's Stationary Office, 1959.

This was a help to me in trying to understand the slightly later non-Mughal painters. This as well as other books were important not in what I found but rather that it allows me to eliminate possible sources for art. For instance how can I attribute the fighting elephants to 1630 unless I eliminate other time periods and parts of India as well. Indian Art

Arfa, General (Prince) Hassan: Under Five Shahs London: John Murray, 1964

A brilliant book by a great Persian Patriot. Prince Arfa was involved in the tribal wars under Reza Shah so there is information in a number of tribes. In 1946 Arfa saved Iran from the Sovietrs by arming the Shahsavan and cutting of the attack on Teheran.

Arnold, Thomas W. C.I.E., F.B.A., Litt.D. Painting in Islam. New York: Dover Publications, Inc. 1965 reprint of a 1928 Oxford University Press Book.

Arnold, Thomas W. This is a tremendously important book in the study of miniature painting in Islamic Art. Arnold bases much of his book on his own translations of important manuscripts. Arnold had such piercing insight that it stays fresh after 70 years. The availability of inexpensive Dover Reprints makes it a must read for someone interested in miniature painting.
