If I lost it I would not replace it.

Of some use but not one I would go out of my way to find.

Useful.

Very useful and one I would recommend strongly.

A very important or even the definitive work on the subject. It does not have to be perfect but if I give it 5 stars and you are interested in that area then you should own a copy.

The best book on Shamil and the Conquest of Chechnia and Daghestan. Many people who think they understand the Caucasus would do very well to read this book. Good maps and charts.

A good older book on Mughal Carpets. I do not have a copy but I borrowed a friends copy when I was doing my paper on Mughal carpets. Daniel Walker's book Flowers Underfoot is better but if you have that you may want to review this one.

I tend to disagree with much of what Dr. Gantzhorn writes but buy this book anyway. Pound for pound one of the best value in rug literature. Huge number of excellent pictures I think there are about 600 rugs pictured..

I think the Der Manuelian, L. and M. Eiland: Weavers, Merchants and Kings, Inscribed Rugs from Armenia and the James Keshishian's Inscribed Armenian Rugs of Yesteryear. are a little better but if you are interested in having in reviewing the literature then this one is valuable. There are a few controversial attributions in this book such as a rug called Armenian that most people call South West Persian. Enjoy this book but read it with discerment.

Sound text extremely well executed. Primarily a look at the architectural and archeological evidence of pre-Islamic Iran. Most valuable for the illustrations.

Glassie, H. Turkish Traditional Art Today. 1993,

Readers who are interested in a folklorist/anthropologist approach to traditional Turkish production would benefit from "Turkish Traditional Art Today" (Indiana University Turkish Studies, No 11) by Henry Glassie Price: $89.95 Hardcover - 947 pages (October 1993) Indiana Univ. Pr; ISBN: 0253325552 ; Dimensions (in inches): 2.44 x 10.37 x 8.94

In this piece Glassie presents fine insights to weavers, felt workers, metal smiths, ceramists, and calligraphers. After reading it I, for the first time, had a sense of the reality of craft tradition, pride and renewal.

The book and price are both hefty - but the piece is worth its weight in gold!

Gray, Basil. Persian Painting. New York: 1961, Skira, Rizzoli, 1977

Very solid scholarship that stands up well after 36 years. I found his chapter on Bukhara very useful. Gray has a better grasp of the shifting of artists from court to court than any other author I have read. The section on the artists of Sultan Ibrahim Mirza is outstanding. I think he may attribute too much to Qazvin but other than that the book reads well.

Grima, Benedicte. The Performance of Emotion in Paxtun Women. Austin: University Of Texas Press, 1992

I like this book and it gives an interesting look into the lives of Pashtun woman. I have some concern however that Grima may have inadvertently skewed her results and have only attracted women that were socially and economically disadvantaged by the standards of their society. If you allow for that then I think her results may be more meaningful. No rugs but good background on an obscure weaving group that I collect.

Grousset, Rene. Conqueror of the World. McKellar, translated by Marian and Sinor, Denis. New York: The Orion Press, 1966.

Not a major worked compared to the next book but it is useful in filling in back-ground information. No rugs but good background.

Grousset, Rene. The Empire of the Steppes. Walford, Naomi translator. New Brunswick: Rutgers University press, 1994.

A major comprehensive guide to the Mongols and there descendents. Studying the Mongols gives one a basis to understand the Mughals, Persians and Turks as well as their neighbors, This is the best single book  I know to explain a huge portion of Asian and world history. Still in print this belongs in every good library. I should note that some of the scholarship has shifted since that book was written but to a non-Mongol specialist the changes are fairly trivial.

Grousset, Rene. The Rise and Splendor of the Chinese Empire. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1968.

First published in 1952 this is a good general guide to early China.

Some good rug pictures. The color is a little off but the designs are very readable. Grube is very knowledgeable.

Grube, Ernest J. Muslim Miniature Paintings From the XIII to XIX Century. Venice: Neri Pozza Editore, 1962.

Even after 35 years this is a wonderful book. Black and white pictures but very good quality. he also has a good selection of miniatures that I have not seen else where. The downside is that the scholarship is 35 years old as well and if he wrote it today there would be many changes.

Guest, Grace Dunham, Shiraz Painting in the Sixteenth Century. Washington DC: Smithsonian Institution, Freer Gallery of Art, Oriental Studies No. 4, 1949

This is the book that delineated the Shiraz school of miniatures in modern scholarship. While this is not a rug book per se, why are no classical carpets attributed to Shiraz? There is a 16th century Shiraz Carpet in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and they do not have a clue what it is.
