JBOC's Notes on Oriental Rugs

Oriental Rug Books Authors Beginning with T
Tufenkian Carpets Area Rug Sale.

If I lost it I would not replace it.

Of some use but not one I would go out of my way to find.

Useful.

Very useful and one I would recommend strongly.

A very important or even the definitive work on the subject. It does not have to be perfect but if I give it 5 stars and you are interested in that area then you should own a copy.

Not Yet Rated - I haven't gotten to it yet so if you wish to review it please feel free. No one is better equipped to explore the pictorial rugs from the tribes and villages of Iran than Parviz Tanavoli. The book is highly readable. Tanavoli is brilliant and Wertime's translation is very good. How often do you see a a book written by one McMullan award winner and translated by another. Lib.

A very good general rug book. Every beginner should have this book and they will still find it useful as they grow in expertise. Dr. Jon Thompson is the most important English scholar in the field of Oriental carpets. Lib.

Thompson, Jon. Oriental Rugs from the Tents, Cottages, and Workshops of Asia. New York: E.P. Dutton, 1988

One of the best and most popular general rug books. Dr. Jon Thompson has made an important contribution to the field of Oriental Rugs and this is an important part of it. Highly recommended.

Tietze, Hans. Treasures From The Great National Galleries. New York: Phaidon Publishers Inc. 1954.

A nice old book on European paintings but it does have a few interesting rugs. Plate 12 is a Herat from the Widener collection of the sort the British attribute to Isfahan. Il. 37 has a nice large pattern Holbein. Il.179 has a nice large pattern Holbein by Holbein. Il. 249 has a nice Turkish rug with a kufic border that one of these days I will get around to taking a closer look at. Lib.

Tilden, Jill. Ed. Silk & Stone The Art Of Asia. London, England: Hali Publications Limited, 1996

Hali annual # 3. A first rate book. Excellent articles and the it has that luxurious Hali look and feel. I bought it for Steven Cohen's article. I think Cohen is fundamentally wrong in most of his basic assumptions but he does it so well that it is highly enjoyable. I have to salute him as a great scholar even though I will soon get around to publishing a rebuttal to his article. Other standouts are Michell on Indian architecture, Hillenbrand on Persian miniatures as well as an article by Sheila Canby on Miniatures. While I admire Canby's work I am going to have to reread that article a few times because something about it bothers me. I just can't put my finger on it, maybe I missed something. Lib.

Tillotson, G. H. R. Mughal India. New York: Penguin Books, 1990

Thank goodness I found this book. Tillotson untangles the movements of Akbar's court in the fourth quarter sixteenth century in a logical and coherent fashion. No rugs however, strictly background material. Lib.

A very pretty general book. Thin on Persia but better on India.

Titley, Norah M. Persian Miniature Painting and its Influence on the Art of Turkey and India: The British Library Collections.

A wonderful book. Titley has a lot to say and says it in an intelligent and cogent manner. Far more substance than many of the books I see on the subject. I am especially taken with the chapter on the Sultanate Period of India. As I reread it and compare facts I have to wonder about some of her suggestions. Lib.

Tsareva, Elena. The Dudin Collection. Meredith: Oriental Rug Auction Review, Inc., 1990.

The Dudin collection is one of the most important Turkoman collections. Dudin noted where each piece was collected and what he believed it to be. Tsareva give a detailed structural analyses of each piece. A present from Ron O'Callaghan.

Tsareva, R. Rugs and Carpets from Central Asia ; Vienna: 1984.

Solid work from a highly interesting author. The work represents the Russian view and is valuable for that reason. Weak on Ersari. Better pictures than I expect from a Russian book I think it was printed in Europe. Eleana Tsareva does a wonderful job and as Russia's leading expert her opinion must be considered.
