| Hello Donato, Me disagree with Marla
Mallett? Thanks a lot. Disagreeing
with Marla is something sane people
avoid. Marla is one of the sharpest
people I know in the rug field but I am
not sure if she may erred on this one.
The one I sold you was like this but in
several keys areas closer to some of the
examples in "SUMAK
BAGS OF NORTHWEST PERSIA AND
TRANSCAUCASIA," by John
Wertime. This area is not a dead on
match to any of Wertime's examples but I
still would at least call the Mallett
piece possibly Shahsavan.
As for Marla's bag a few things stand
out:
- The colors look very good and
there is a good range of colors.
The light blue and the Dark blue
with the well saturated red are
signs of a superior piece as is
the yellow.
- The yarn is fine. On later
examples the weavers used thicker
yarn and the pieces do not look
as nice. 20th century pieces look
to me as if they were woven from
a different breed of sheep.
- The piece is attractive and well
made. Please note the red line
around the blue medallion after
you see a number of these you
will notice that not all are this
nicely done.
In fairness many Shahsavan
are of Kurdish
ancestries and some of the attributions
in Northwest Persia are a bit muddled.
This is a very good piece and even if
Marla is correct that it is Kurd the price
seems more than fair. Marla if you want
to comment on your attribution feel free.
Just don't rough me up too badly, I'm
sensitive :-)
Best wishes,
Barry
