Five Pillars of Islam
In the practice of Islam there are 5 pillars of faith.
These are things that the moslems called to practice.
Theses professions are:
- shahada - faith,
- salat - prayer,
- zakat - almsgiving,
- sawm - fasting,
- hajj - pilgrimage.
Shahada - Faith
- The Profesion of faith is the declaration;
"I bear witness that there is no god but
Allah and that Muhammad is his prophet." By
this profession a moslem is a Moslem and it is
not open to review by any authority short of
their God.
Salat - Prayer,
- Adult Moslems are called to pray 5 times a day.
This envolves standing, bowing, and prostrating
ones self while praying. The prayers often
contain the Moslem profesion of faith and quotes
from the Koran. On Fridays the noon prayer is
lead by the imam and is a congregational prayer
whereas the rest of the weeks prayers may be
alone or with others. Prayer is prefaced by
ritual cleanseing called ablution. The ritual of
ablution may entail wasking the entire body or
just the hands, mouth, face, and feet.
Zakat - Almsgiving,
- Moslems are obligated to show their devotion to
their god through a tithe for charitable works.
Zakat differs from sadaqa in that Zakat is
obligatortory while sadaqa is voluntary giving.
Sawm - Fasting,
- Moslems are called to fasting during the month of
Ramadan. Fasting is also used as a form of
penance for various offenses and violations of
the law. Fasting may occur at other times but
then it is a voluntary ct of devotion.
Hajj - Pilgrimage
- If physically and financially able Moslems are
required to make a pilgramage to Mecca at least
once in their lives.
